I am back in Nottingham!
After my last visit, it was clear that I missed the centre of the city. So I returned, this time with a local who said he would show me round.
It was great to return with someone who knew details about the place, who wasn't afraid to shy away from the problems that there are. There are a lot of boarded up shops and empty units. You cannot deny that. But it was also great to see the busy parts of the city.
Huge thanks to Rob for inviting me back.
Until Next Time,
W.T

I lived in Leeds for 8 years and go up every so often for work. The way it’s changed over the years is pretty bleak. Obviously lockdown did a number on the nightlife but so many independents have been closed, rent put up. It’s fabled cheap night out is gone, all the little shops you’d visit for have been replaced by generic shops which then close down. It’s like a snake eating its own tail.

I’ve been to Nottingham tons of times as I have family there. City Centre has always been very busy everytime I’ve been. Two decent universities make for lots of people coming and going all the time etc, as well as two football clubs (one in PL), massive cricket ground etc etc. All I can say he’s actually gone on a weekday in the morning or something 😅 Try Swindon, absolute dump of a centre!

From Leeds, grew up there and still visit regularly. Leeds in 2024 is very much like the Leeds I remember as a kid (which was the mid 90s): a ghost town run down by Tories for over a decade. Used to work at the White Rose too; it was like purgatory with a Costa Coffee!

Very interesting video, especially as I am originally from notts and it's such a shame to see what's become of it. What I would say is it's interesting that you state the causes for the decline in high street shopping, but what makes other shopping centres especially in other countries successful as they, give or take, have the same issues, especially online shopping. I currently reside in Doha, Qatar, and the shopping centres here are thriving. But then again, Qatar has wealth and disposable income....

Some history on Guild Hall briefly... Your guide mentioned the Council House is no longer where the Council are based, they still are, but of course the Council is huge and that building is actually small inside in terms of office space. So only the Coroners, Registrars & Full Council meetings are held there now. The rest of the staff moved into offices behind, in what is called the Exchange Buildings (behind Council House near the shopping arcade) and The Guild Hall. Then the Council purchased Loxley House from Capital One on Station Street and staff moved into there, from Guild Hall, Exchange Buildings and various other much smaller sites. :) Source: I work at NCC I am mega appreciative that you came back for another visit and accepted Rob's gracious offer to guide you around our City. A lot of people talk down regarding it, but I personally love our City.

Big retail parks with big sports clothing retailer stores are where people go nowadays.. easier access and parking.. shame but hey, it’s where we’re at.. Central london high end stores still see to be thriving.. and surrounding areas.. regeneration can possibly help.. but odds n sods shops just ain’t got the same demand anymore.. high streets only survivors are coffee shops, nail bars and Turkish barbers

Great video, love what you’re doing for the high street, if I can correct one thing about what your friend said, primark is a uk based company, their patent company is called “pennies” established in Dublin many years ago. They open a few stores in Northern Ireland during the troubles under the uk name primark. They competed with the M & S, British Home Stores, C &A in Belfast and lots of Northern Ireland towns, their profits may end up in Dublin, but they do pay tax in the Uk. I do agree with the cheep labour comments however. The throwaway mentality of our younger generation, my kids included, is why they still survive in the high street. That said we should be educating people on what companies do pay there fair share of tax in the uk. There a certain coffee shops I don’t use. Keep up the good work

this is what happens when your energy real estate and resorces are CONTROLLED by other nations TAXation doesn't help and they only tax inidviduals high because corperations have monopolies so they can just raise prices to cover the tax deficits.

Dude I lived in notts in 2006-2011, moved to london and now run startup in notts. Notts changed for better. So many new good restaurants, it feels much less suburban than before. Finally there are proper good quality restaurants (everyday people for ramen, Iberico bar, pozzamisu, mesa, kushiya), bars (Pogo, 400 rabbits, coco tang), good quality coffee (200o) etc. No one needs any more high street shops, instead we need places to hang out, meet people, good restaurants, coffee places, bars. These spaces can be used for new startups, if price is right, council gave us one year for free for our r&d space. So, strongly disagree, notts is better now than 10 years ago, and I hope more new people and more funding comes into notts, it has a lot of potential and it just nice to be there.

You're experiencing the first wave of the disaster as the Mall kills the High Street. The second wave of the disaster is when Amazon or some other on-lin merchandiser kills the Mall. In San Francisco, an extraordinarily wealthy city, bad municipal government in combination with COVID has created a vast retai wasteland. I wonder if a contemporary Charles Dickens will write "The Old Curiosity Website."
